DEVELOPERS and investors need to do a better job addressing environmental concerns in their projects, real estate adviser Jones Lang LaSalle said yesterday in its first white paper on sustainable development in China.
"Implementing sustainable building practices in the real estate sector can and will make a significant contribution to the environment, and the process is a partnership through proper planning and consultation between parties including owners, occupiers and builders," said Anthony Couse, managing director of Jones Lang LaSalle's Shanghai operation.
Projects constructed under sustainable-development concepts use techniques, materials and technologies that minimize the structures' effects on the environment, while adequately supporting the activities within.
Education of the owners and occupiers is the key factor in ensuring the successful implementation of green strategies, which mainly include energy and water conservation, waste management and improvements in indoor air quality.
There are no official standards in China for sustainable buildings at present, however, and only one building in Beijing has filed for a rating based on a nationally accepted "green" benchmark in the US.
